The Intentional Endowments Network has taken off -- growing in 18 months from an idea to an active community of learning and action made up of contributions from hundreds of participants.

We have hosted five major forums, and convened a Steering Committee of leaders from higher education, the investment industry, non-profits, and philanthropic organizations.

We have pulled together key reports and resources on financial performance, fiduciary duty, ESG integration, shareholder engagement, and more. We've also highlighted several examples of what campuses across the country are doing to more closely align their endowment investing practices with their institutional mission, values, and sustainability goals.

There is a sea change underway in terms of how endowments - and all institutional investors - think about the risks and opportunities that 21st century sustainability challenges present.
In August 2015, we published a case study looking at that initiative, and how it was informed by the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, in the Journal of Cleaner Production, titled:

I am working with Second Nature and Hampshire College to host an event -- not quite a conference, but more of a participative stakeholder engagement gathering -- on the topic of endowment investment practices in April 2014.

We will be hosting about 100-150 college and university presidents, business officers, trustees, endowment managers, private foundation officers, investment professionals, and other key stakeholders.

While the movement encouraging endowments to divest from fossil fuel holdings is a strong driver of action in this space at the moment, this event will not be about divestment. It will be a chance to learn about a range of investment strategies that can help institutions more closely align their investments with their values -- from positive or negative screening, to shareholder engagement or activism, integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors, social finance, and more.

We have engaged a great group of advisors to serve as a Steering Committee for the event, and will have Bob Litterman, a risk expert and former Goldman Sachs partner provide a keynote. We see this as an initial step in developing a broader initiative for fostering collaboration and action on effective, feasible and strategic approaches to responsible endowment investing.
We are conducting a strategic evaluation of Norway's International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI) for the Norwegian Government.

In 2007 at COP 13 in Bali, the Prime Minister of Norway made a big commitment to support the development of REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). Since then they've pledged $1B each to Indonesia and Brazil through pay-for-performance agreements where funds are provided for demonstrated emissions reductions. NICFI has also provided support for developing the REDD mechanism through multilateral organizations (UNEP and UNDP, World Bank) and other countries including Guyana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Mexico, the DRC, and more.

The following video provides a basic overview of the REDD mechanism. It's not without controversy, but an effective mechanism for protecting the world's great forests will have to be part of the climate solution. Emissions from deforestation and forest degradation make up about 15% of global emissions; on the order of those from the entire transportation sector. Refining and improving the REDD mechanism could be the best way to do that.

As one of the largest universities in the US with more than 72,000 students, ASU is working at scale.
There are lots of ways to count and measure how many of those students are receiving meaning EfS experiences, but one way we measured it -- looking at the undergrad and graduate students in the School of Sustainability, as well as those earning certificates or minors in sustainability through other schools, and those in sustainability-related majors -- we found that there are over 3,100 students enrolled in sustainability programs. While that's a long way from all 72,000 students at ASU, it is more than the total enrollment of about two-thirds of all of the colleges and universities in the country.

GIOS has worked to foster cross-disciplinary research and collaboration. More than 265 faculty members are affiliated with GIOS as Sustainability Scientists or Scholars. This program provides support and helps bring faculty together to work on tough sustainability challenges from the perspective of many disciplines.

ASU gives strong emphasis to access, affordability, diversity and inclusion. It aims to have its student population reflect the demographic mix of the state. ASU is also driven by President Crow's vision of the "New American University" -- a concept guided by eight design aspirations which include engaging globally, leveraging place, conducting use-inspired research, enabling student success, and transforming society. In short, it's about academia breaking down barriers internally and with the surrounding world to by more deliberate and intentional about solving the pressing, real-world challenges of the times.

This type of transformational change is incredibly challenging. It will necessarily take decades to fully realize. But it is exciting, and absolutely critical -- because we won't be able to create a sustainable society if higher education doesn't re-orient itself so that doing so is a fundamental goal, integrated into all aspects of the institution.

The BDGC is a national effort with the goal of having $1 billion cumulatively invested in campus Green Revolving Funds (GRFs) geared towards financing sustainability projects on campuses for projects related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, water conservation and the like.

Last week, we were at the University San Diego for the Financing the Future of Energy Efficiency Summit. It was a great event, and an excellent venue for participants to learn from each other and the speakers.

To date, 39 colleges and universities have joined the BDGC, committing a total of $79 million to GRFs that will support their institutions for years to come. The projects funded by these GRFs will provide solid financial returns to the institutions - the recently published "Greening the Bottom Line" report from SEI found that on average GRFs are realizing returns of 28%.

These projects will also help schools meet their sustainability goals, and perhaps most importantly make campuses living labs for sustainability -- providing students with valuable experiential education opportunities that will help them internalize sustainability concepts and practices, so they can apply them throughout their personal and professional lives.

With the fossil fuels divestment campaigns building steam across the country, the BDGC provides a very compelling alternative with multiple ancillary benefits for endowment managers looking for ways to get out of fossil fuel investments without sacrificing returns.
Second Nature has launched a new branded blog series on the GreenBiz media platform called @edu.

@edu will aim to highlight some of the most exciting and innovative sustainability efforts happening at colleges and universities and share lessons they might hold for corporate sustainability practitioners.

I wrote the first post, published today, titled "What can business learn about sustainability from higher ed." It gives a quick overview of campus sustainability efforts and education for sustainability trends in higher ed, and then takes a look at Arizona State University's ambitious zero waste initiative.

There's rich opportunity for business and higher education to work together in creating a sustainable society. Campuses are natural testing grounds for sustainability solutions and if businesses articulate a demand for sustainability-literate graduates, higher ed will be sure to deliver.
Second Nature coordinated the 2012 ACUPCC Climate Leadership Summit June 21-22, 2012. The event was hosted by American University, and provided a chance to celebrate 5 years of climate action and leadership from the higher education sector.
It's hard to believe this was the 6th Summit we've held. We had great attendance, compelling speakers, and plenty of time for presidents and senior administrators to roll-up their sleeves and work together on the challenging issues associated with delivering 21st century education for sustainability, and pursuing climate neutrality in campus operations.

You can access a summary of the event, see the winners of the 2012 Climate Leadership Awards, and speaker presentations here.

The Summit focused on "Economic Renewal: Jumpstarting a sustainable economy through the ACUPCC." Attendees explored themes of preparedness, innovation, and opportunity. They looked at higher education's role in preparing students for the 21st century economy, and ensuring sustainability literacy. They evaluated how sustainability constraints can drive innovation through research and role-modeling solutions on campus. And they evaluated how sustainability can increase opportunity for more students to access higher education by reducing operating costs and generating new sources of funding.

Check out this compelling video from Bill McKibben that was shared with participants on the first night of the Summit:
Yesterday I shot up to Exeter, NH to speak to a group of students interested in sustainability - more details are available at this Second Nature blog post.

So great to see such smart young people so committed to and interested in sustainability - gives a lot of hope, which we need right now as the release of the Senate climate bill is delayed and its fate looks very uncertain.Georges Dyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06565513691257540801noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27424082.post-71458346740247799732010-04-15T21:28:00.019+02:002013-01-19T19:06:25.268+01:00UNCF Building Green Learning Instituteby Georges Dyer April 15, 2010

Earlier this month, Kyoto Publishing, as part of its Awareness into Action series released a white paper I authored that takes a look at HFCs - HFCs in Fire Protection Systems: An Invisible and Unnecessary Climate Threat.

While responsible for only a relatively small part of total HFC use, fire suppression systems have the opportunity to employ effective alternatives that pose a lesser climate risk. As such, I contend that HFCs for fire suppression shouldn't be part of a special set-aside for HFCs used in air conditioning and refrigeration under pending climate legislation.

On August 13-14, 2009, Greenland Enterprises supported Second Nature in organizing and coordinating the 3rd annual ACUPCC Climate Leadership Summit in Chicago.

It was an amazing event with an unbelievable line-up of speakers, including former President Bill Clinton, Under Secretary of the US Dept of Education Martha Kanter, USGBC President Rick Fedrizzi, Biomimicry guru Janine Benyus, and a dialogue session facilitated by leadership and organizational learning expert Peter Senge.

Links to a full summary of the Summit, speakers presentations and press coverage is available here.

Participants also heard from Michael Kinsley of the Rocky Mountain Institute and Joe Grasso of Cornell University. Much of the event's focus was on energy efficiency, whole-system design, and financing strategies for sustainability projects.
